Supplier Diversity

Small, Woman-Owned, and Minority-Owned Businesses & UVA

Procurement's Supplier Diversity department is excited about what we're bringing to you in 2024!  With new team members in place, and a strong commitment to increasing our engagement with local, small, woman-owned, and minority-owned businesses, we're primed for big things!

The University of Virginia spends $44.7 million with local suppliers.  As a part of efforts tied to President Jim Ryan's local economy working group, however, we have committed to increasing the proportion of funds going to local businesses.  You can learn more about this working group on this UVA site.

Supplier Diversity in Action

At the University of Virginia, our procurement department is committed to supporting the local business community through active partnerships and outreach efforts. Our efforts, in accordance with President Ryan’s 2030 Plan, specifically the commitment to be a strong partner and good neighbor to the Charlottesville region.  We collaborate with local small business advocacy groups like the Community Investment Collaborative, Central Virginia Small Business Development Center, Minority Business Alliance, and the Charlottesville Chamber of Commerce. By hosting workshops such as “How to Do Business with UVA” and supplier outreach events like the Supplier Diversity Expo and “It Takes a Village: Increasing Opportunities at UVA,” we provide valuable opportunities for local businesses to connect with buyers and contractors at the University.

Additionally, we partner with the City of Charlottesville, Albemarle County's Economic Development teams, and other VASCUPP schools to broaden our outreach to diverse and capable suppliers. We engage directly with local business owners to offer one-on-one guidance, helping them navigate the University's procurement process, and we meet with departments across Grounds to assess local and diverse spending opportunities. By notifying local suppliers about upcoming contract opportunities, we ensure they stay informed and ready to engage with UVA.
